Matices Del Sur started as a trio in July 2012 when Juan Carlos Azpilcueta (Cajon Player) introduced Monica Alvarez (Lead Singer) to Manuel Lara (Lead Guitar Player). They gathered at the New Brighton Park in Vancouver to know each other musically and to experiment the repertory to work with. Monica, Juan Carlos and Manuel assumed their roles in the band as follows: Monica as the lead vocalist and the rhythm guitar player, Juan Carlos as the Cajon player and Manuel as the lead guitar player and musical director. Matices Del Sur built a repertory with songs that belong to the Creole and afro-Peruvian music.
On January 2013, Silvana Fuentes (Lead Singer) joined to Matices Del Sur enhancing the band performance with her unique voice and making possible to assemble arrangements that require female duets and harmonies. Since then Matices Del Sur added to its repertory new songs and rhythms that became the favourites of its audience.
In February 2013 Juan Carlos Azpilcueta decided to leave the band for personal reasons and Rocky Salvador (Cajon Player) joined to the band doing his debut at The Kozmik Zoo in March 2013. The way how Rocky plays El Cajón Peruano blended perfectly with the style of the band and it was possible to try original arrangements with the new repertory.
In May 2013, Rafael Valverde (Bass Player) joined to the band and for the first time the band counted with the sound of a bass guitar. The change was drastic, and new possibilities became reality, Rafael not only plays the bass guitar but also sings making possible working with songs that required male duets. Rafael made his debut at Charqui Grill.
Fernando Torres was supporting Matices Del Sur for long time before he decided to join to the band in July 2013; his debut was at In the House Festival. Fernando is a multitasking percussionist besides the Cajón Peruano he plays congas, bongo and cowbell giving the aesthetic details to the Matices Del Sur performance.
In December 2013 Silvana Fuentes decided to leave the band and Alexandra Salvador (Lead Singer) took her place, her debut was at Charqui Grill with a total support of the audience. Alexandra is a talented artist that not only has a beautiful voice but also plays piano and light percussion. She will bring unlimited possibilities to the band and the sound of Matices Del Sur will became more solid than ever.
In January 2015 Rafael Valverde decided to leave the band and Alberto Rivera (Bass Player) joined MDS to play the bass guitar. Alberto learned quickly the MDS’s repertory and very soon he was familiar with the different rhythms of the Creole and afro-Peruvian music. In February 2015 Fernando Torres decided also to leave the band and MDS became a 5 members band.
